Indie Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch Begins Shooting New Zombie Comedy The Dead Don’t Die

"I prefer to be subcultural rather than mass-cultural. I'm not interested in hitting the vein of the mainstream." -- Jim Jarmusch

On July 13, Focus Features announced in a press release that director Jim Jarmusch is now working on a new zombie comedy called The Dead Don’t Die. This is Jarmusch’s third film with Focus Features according to the press release.

The movie features some well-known cast members who starred in some of Jarmusch’s previous films. They include Adam Driver (Paterson) and Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive) as well as Academy Award nominees Chloë Sevigny and Bill Murray (both starred in Broken Flowers). Photos taken on the set reveal that Driver, Sevigny, and Murray will be playing police officers in the film.

The movie also stars singer and actress Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers) and actor Austin Butler (Yoga Hosers), who “might be playing a couple attacked by zombies” in the film according to entertainment website JustJared.com.

No details have been released about the plot of The Dead Don’t Die, but critics and viewers alike are eager to see how Jarmusch will apply his offbeat and unusual filming style to the zombie genre. He has not experimented with horror themes in his work since making Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), which has been described in a Film Stage article as “one of the greatest vampire films of all-time.”

Currently, The Dead Don’t Die is being shot in upstate New York, but a release date has not been officially announced.
