A Quiet Place, a sci-fi horror film about a family who tries to survive in a world taken over by aliens that hunt by sound, appeared in theaters back in April. (You can read my review of it here.) John Krasinski took on multiple duties in this film, serving as director and co-writer and playing main character Lee Abbott. Actress Emily Blunt, who is married to Krasinski in real life, co-starred as Lee Abbott’s wife, Evelyn Abbott.
The movie turned out to be a big box office hit. The Express reports that the $17 million film took in $338.5 million worldwide. Now a sequel to A Quiet Place is in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Krasinski was writing the sequel to A Quiet Place back on October 18. At first, Krasinski was not interested in working on the sequel because “he preferred to leave it as a special experience” he shared with Blunt. An idea for the sequel eventually came to him, but he “didn’t think it would go anywhere.” He told Paramount, “’Just go do the movie with somebody else.’”
Paramount was in the process of doing that, but the idea grew until Krasinski decided it could be developed into a sequel:
“They heard some pitches, and I told [producer] Drew [Form] about this little idea,” said Krasinski. “And he told me to think about it a little longer. And then I thought, ‘This might really work.’ So, I’m currently writing the sequel.”
A few weeks after making this announcement, Krasinski remains elusive about the plot details of A Quiet Place 2. In a November 2nd interview with Entertainment Weekly, Krasinski said he was intrigued by the possibility of exploring “very different facets” of the Abbott family’s unusual world:
“This is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake…. it’s actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience,” he explained. “It’s not like Alien or Jaws where the main villain is the thing you’re repeating; it’s an actual entire set of rules and the circumstance that the world has undergone that you can play in very different facets.”
He jokingly added, “So I think I perfectly avoided your question.”
While the sequel does not have an official title or a plot at this point, it does have an official release date. According to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount announced that A Quiet Place 2 is “scheduled for a wide release on May 15, 2020.”
